Personalised assessments: reading and numeracy in Wales
Children in Years 2 to 9 in Welsh state schools take online personalised assessments in reading and numeracy at least once a year. The questions adapt to each answer, so every child gets a different assessment. There is no pass mark and no set test week. The results help teachers plan the next steps.
What is assessed?
Reading
- Understanding a text and making judgements about it
- In English, and in Welsh for Welsh-medium learners
Numeracy (Procedural)
- Number facts and calculation methods
- The number skills used in everyday maths
Numeracy (Reasoning)
- Using maths to solve problems in real-life situations
How does an adaptive assessment work?
The system picks each question based on your child's last answer. The assessment ends by itself when it has enough information.
A correct answer
The next question is a little harder.
A wrong answer
The next question is a little easier.
Enough information
The assessment stops. A shorter assessment does not mean a lower result.
