Getuigschrift basisonderwijs: 1A or 1B in secondary school

At the end of year 6, the class council (klassenraad) decides whether your child receives the getuigschrift basisonderwijs, the Flemish primary school certificate. There is no central exam for it. With the certificate your child starts secondary school in 1A, without it in 1B. You hear the decision end of school year.

When do you hear in 2027?

The decision comes at the end of the school year. Registration for secondary school starts earlier.

  1. February – April 2027

    Register for secondary school

In many cities you register online. Not sure yet whether it will be 1A or 1B? Ask the school or the CLB (pupil guidance centre).

  2. End of the school year

    Class council

The class council decides using all the information about your child.

  3. End of the school year

    Decision to parents

If your child does not receive the certificate, the school explains why in writing.

  4. Early July 2027

    Meeting or appeal

Disagree? First ask for a meeting with the head teacher. After that you can appeal. The school rules set out the deadlines.

  5. Start of the new school year

    Secondary school starts

In 1A or 1B, at the school where your child is registered.

Who decides on the getuigschrift?

The class council looks at the whole picture: whether your child has sufficiently reached the curriculum goals that lead to the attainment targets.

  • Reports and assessments

From this and last school year

  • LVS and the teacher

How your child has grown, and the teacher's report

The class council decides
  • Certificate awarded

Your child starts in 1A. 1B is also possible, after a favourable decision from the admissions class council and if everyone agrees.

  • No certificate

Your child starts in 1B and can still earn the certificate there. After 1B comes 2B, or 1A or 2A if the admissions class council agrees.
